How I got to where I am today!
For as long as I can remember, I have expressed a strong interest in rocks, minerals, gems and the way the world has evolved. The process of how the earth created such beautiful structures visible to us and beneath our feet continues to amaze me. As a child, I found myself collecting minerals and constantly contemplating about how the minerals progressed into such a simplistic form of beauty. Over time it became evident that our world consists of a variety of elegant structures that can be worn aesthetically to represent love, fashion, and commemoration.
During the summer of 2015, I was fortunate enough to shadow Michael Abushakra, the owner of Brynn Elizabeth Jewelers, and observe the daily tasks required of a gemologist and jeweler. At that time, I was completing my final year at Appalachian State University and I knew that I wanted to pursue a career as a gemologist. I have always had an artistic mind but found it difficult to connect my love of gems and art. It was within those few weeks that I had found my calling. Every day I was given the chance to share my prior knowledge and recent findings with customers and friends.
Not long after, in May of 2016, I graduated from Appalachian State University (ASU) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. My journey at Appalachian State proved to be a vibrant experience along with an unparalleled opportunity to build my knowledge of, not only understanding the earth’s structures, but how it’s intertwined with our daily lives. I knew when I graduated from ASU that my journey was not finished. My personal interest and desire to continue my education streamlined into a new goal of attending the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). GIA is an institute that is dedicated to the education and research of multiple fields such as: gemology and jewelry arts. Attending GIA significantly increased my knowledge and desire for gems. Now that I have graduated from GIA and received my Graduate Gemology certification, I am able to start a new beginning as a Gemologist.
I am currently the newest employee and Graduate Gemologist at Brynn Elizabeth Jewelers located in Ocean Isle Beach. The time that I have spent at Brynn Elizabeth Jewelers has intensified my commitment and excitement for what the future holds. Gemology gives me the opportunity to combine a beloved hobby with the ability to bring joy to various individuals. To share the amazement and delight of a gift that I created for someone is immensely rewarding.
My overall aspiration is to strive to become the best gemologist I can possibly be and to inform others on the astonishing features unknown to the common eye. Gemology is fascinating in the sense that it is a field of continuous growth. Gemologists have the opportunity to constantly learn about gem properties and their distinct chemical and physical features. Gemology is also an exceptional field that consists of interacting with the public as well as studying and identifying mysteries hidden within the gems. As I continue in the hopes of pursuing my dream, my family has been entirely supportive. Although, none of my family understands the world of geology or gemology, they are able to grasp my desire and urge for minerals and gems.
